Roll With the Punches

Things in life can be difficult.  That’s just the way it works sometimes.  But too often people let these moments define themselves.  They fail to realize that it isn’t the hardships that make us who we are.  It’s how we respond to them.

I know a lot of people in my life that have gone through some incredibly challenges patches in recent years.  They’ve struggled with the things that life has thrown at them and have dealt with enormous amounts of sorrow, anxiety, and suffering.  When I think about this group of people, I note that there are two divisions:  those that take the hard times and wallow in it, allowing life to pull them into a perpetual downward spiral and those that are determined to find the way to stop the boat and find the happy place in their lives again.

Tough times often are thrust upon us without cause.  Sometimes life is unfair.  Sometimes we just don’t deserve what comes our way.  But we do have control of the way that we respond and react.

There is something special about a person that gets thrown into the fires of hardship yet finds a way to rise from the ashes like a phoenix.  I have a special place in my heart for this breed of people.  Persevering and overcoming breeds respect and appreciation for a person’s character.

It’s difficult to do at times.  That I fully understand.  I fully believe that how we handle difficult situations and how steadfast we are at getting through them and pushing ourselves to a better place will define both how people perceive us to be and also how we feel about ourselves.

And just as importantly, besides taking the actions to build within yourself this positive energy and optimism, surround yourself with those people that will contribute and add to your resolve. Simply put, positive energy and encouragement are harvested from positive and encouraging people. When we show that we will not let the hard times defeat us, you will find that the good people in our lives will envelope us and not let us fall.

So I will end today’s post with a message to those of you that are dealing with challenges in your life and find it difficult to find hope in dark times.  I’m proud of you.  I’m proud that you’re still fighting for a better life and a better future.  Stay strong in battling the challenges that life throws your way.  If you stay resolved to finding the answers and seeking a better tomorrow, you will continue to build within yourselves the character and inner strength that you will need to propel you through the rest of your lives.
